importants qui les portaient en
pendentif, peut-être pour assurer
la fécondité de l’ensemble de la
collectivité.

This type of fi gural sculpture
would have been owned only by
important men, who wore them as
pendants, perhaps to ensure the
fertility of the entire community.
The Art sans Pareil (Unrivaled
Art) gallery is a long-term exhibition intended
to accompany the Royal Museum for Central
Africa's new permanent installation and to
contribute to extending its scope. The choice
of subjects, the selection of the corpus of works
displayed there, and the content of the tactile
stations that it will include were all specifi cally
intended by the exhibition’s curator and approved
by the board to complement the objects
in the permanent installation by presenting material
on subjects the latter does not cover.
Another feature of Art sans Pareil is that
it will be accompanied by a booklet in four
languages—French, Dutch, English, and Ger-

original, conçue en marge de la nouvelle exposition
permanente de référence du musée royal de
l’Afrique centrale dont elle contribue ainsi à élargir
la portée. En effet, l’élaboration des thématiques,
le choix du corpus des oeuvres qui sont livrées à
l’appréciation du public, la réalisation du contenu
des bornes tactiles s’y rapportant furent effectués
suivant le seul critère du commissaire, en bonne entente
avec la direction de l’établissement et complétant
d’une certaine manière les salles permanentes
en proposant des thématiques non abordées dans
ces dernières.
Autre singularité, « Art sans pareil » fonctionne
de pair avec un livret disponible en quatre langues
– français, néerlandais, anglais et allemand – qui
sera également téléchargeable gratuitement sur
le site Internet du musée. La raison première de
