classical antiquities of his time,
Towneley is seated center. Charles
Greville stands at the back left. The
other two fi gures are palaeographer
Charles Astle and antiquarian Pierre-
François Hugues d’Hancarville. The
latter collaborated with Sir William
Hamilton on the books documenting
his fi rst collection of antiquities.
