PARIS—For afi cionados and players in the tribal
art scene, getting back into the swing of things after
the summer break has been easy to do ever since the
annual Parcours des Mondes art fair made September
synonymous with so many new discoveries and
so much fresh information being available. This
is the eighteenth time Paris’ Saint-Germaindes
Prés will become effervescent in the late
summer as it brings together the best dealers
and most passionate collectors in the fi elds of
African, Oceanic, Native American, and Asian
arts for the world’s foremost international multiple
venue show for these fi elds.
This year, Parcours des Mondes will be held
September 10–15 and will host sixty-four participating
dealers, half of whom are normally
based outside France, and eight of whom (fi ve
more than last year) specialize in classical archaeology
of the Mediterranean Basin, Egypt,
and the Near East. Its ever-broadening scope
continues to refl ect the organization’s goal to
be inclusive and multidisciplinary in its approach and,
in so doing, refl ect the increasingly eclectic tastes of
twenty-fi rst-century art connoisseurs—collectors such
as Kiveli Alexiou, who will be Honorary President of
the 2019 Parcours des Mondes. This young Greek national,
whose sensitivity is rivaled only by her discernment,
embodies the archetype of a new generation
of collectors for whom the quest for beauty is nourished
by a fascination for the widely varied ways in
which cultures have interpreted humanity’s universal
themes, such as life, death, love, and the divine.
