PRE-COLUMBIAN ART
AT DROUOT
Paris—Millon auction house will be focusing on South
and Central American and especially Mexican art with
its sale of the collection of Arturo Aguinaga, a longstanding
and well-known collector with a keen eye
and an unquenchable thirst for discovery. Over the
year, this Barcelona-based business executive has put
together an impressive collection of Pre-Columbian
Mexican works in ceramic and other materials from
the Maya, Veracruz, and West Mexican cultures with
the help of Spanish dealer Federico Benthem. All of
the works are in an exceptionally good state of preservation,
refl ecting an essential acquisition criterion for
Aguinaga. Major Peruvian works, both Nazca and Mochica,
will also be offered. Highlights of the sale include
a magnifi cent Jaina ceramic nearly thirty centimeters
high depicting the enthronement of a ruler, rare in the
island’s production; a Maya vessel with superbly preserved
polychrome paint; and an anthropo-zoomorphic
stone hacha from Veracruz.
This important collection was almost purchased by
the Museo Nacional de Arqueología de Madrid, but
the transaction never came to fruition. As such, the
collection is now being offered outside of Spain, and it
represents a rare opportunity that afi cionados will not
want to miss. This exceptional event will be held at the
Hotel Drouot on December 1, 2018.
