Lawrence Pebbles
NOVATO, CALIFORNIA—A native of Marin County
in Northern California, Lawrence Pebbles has long
been an art collector. However, some years ago during
a trip to Papua New Guinea, Oceanic art hooked him.
He became an avid collector of Oceanic art, especially
New Guinea art, refi ning his eye over the years
through purchases, study, and ongoing interactions
with dealers and other collectors. His particular interest
is the ritual and spiritual aspects of the artworks.
He recently decided to turn his passion for the art into
a business by becoming a private art dealer. He is actively
looking to acquire material to build his inventory
and already has some fi ne material available for collectors.

We’re happy to welcome
Lawrence to this new
phase of his career.
Bonhams Highlights
LOS ANGELES—Bonhams will hold its summer Native
American art sale on June 17, 2009. Of the 300
lots being offered, 100 will be pots from the Estate of
Bertram J. Malenka, who, along with his wife, Ruth,
was a longtime collector of Pueblo pottery. Also included
will be ten lots of Plains and Plateau material
from the L. D. “Brink” Brinkman Collection, the most
signifi cant of which is a rare Southern Plains Ghost
Dance shirt, dating from circa 1890. Likely Arapaho,
the shirt is decorated with buffalo, crows, stars, and
crescent moons. Another highlight is an exceptionally
fi ne, fresh-to-the-market Washoe basket by Louisa
Keyser/Dat So La Lee (1829–1925), consigned from a
private California collection.
