Heritage Auctions
DALLAS—A rare Iroquois ball-headed club
dating to c. 1800 is among the highlights
of Heritage Auctions’ Ethnographic Art:
American Indian, Pre-Columbian, and Tribal
Auction on June 25, 2019. Created in the
western or northern part of New York State,
it was created as a functional weapon rather
than a ceremonial or presentation item, and
such examples are rarely seen on the market.
Other top lots of Native American art include a
pair of Yokuts baskets woven by Aida Maggie Icho
(aka Wachnomkot) around 1925 and a Northwest
Coast chilkat blanket, woven of mountain goat hair in
what has been called one of the most complex weaving
techniques in the world. All come from private
collections.
Offerings from Africa include an unusually large
(58 cm) Mambila fi gure and a Bamana boli fi gure.
The Pre-Columbian Americas are led by an important
green serpentine Olmec mask with traces of cinnabar
pigmentation that was collected between 1930 and
1938 by Harold Thomas, an engineer with General
Electric who was stationed in Mexico at the time. A
Nazca/Siguas mantle from the south coast of Peru
nearly two meters long and with the distinctive “spider”
motif is a signifi cant textile lot. Finally,
a large round Diquis gold pendant
with elaborate transformational shamanic
motifs is an exceptional example of
its type. It was owned by dealer Enrique
Vargas Alfaro in the 1960s.
Featuring 410 lots, this is one of the
strongest sales that Heritage has offered,
with material running the range from
masterpieces to curiosities. Bidding opens
on the Heritage website on June 4, 2019.
