Canadian gallery owner Jacques Germain has been a
consistent participant since 2010 and will cross the Atlantic
once again to present a selection of major and traditional
African works. He has announced that he will be focusing
on works from Côte d’Ivoire this year, offering a number of
Senufo, Bété, and Anyi works. Serge Schoffel also returns
this year and will be showing a group of important African
pieces, including a Fang reliquary guardian fi gure, as well
as a wide variety of Oceanic works, including an especially
old Ewa sculpted wooden head from the Karawari River
area of Papua New Guinea, and a refi ned Maori hei-tiki
jade pendant. A number of headdresses and ornaments
from New Guinea, formerly in the collection of John Friede
and which will be illustrated in a forthcoming book on the
subject that the gallery is publishing, will also be on hand.
The galleries of uncle and nephew Charles and Philippe
Ratton will share a booth at BRAFA this year as an homage
to the Ratton family dealer dynasty, of which they represent
the second and third generations. The fi rst fi gure in
this saga was, of course, Charles Ratton, a profoundly signifi
cant fi gure in the history of the tribal art market, whose
aesthetic taste and groundbreaking efforts will be celebrated
with a selection of tribal artworks complemented by
canvases by his close friend, Jean Dubuffet.
Finally, BRAFA will host the Guilhem Montagut Gallery
for the fi rst time this year. Based in Barcelona and well
known on the international tribal art market for participating
in BRUNEAF and Parcours des Mondes, the objects he
will offer at this prestigious venue will be commensurate
with the event’s importance and consist of some twenty
major African artworks, among which a Kwele mask from
Gabon and several Dogon sculptures are particularly worthy
of mention.
