Ils améliorent également notre capacité à détecter plus facilement la source des matières animales et peuvent dès lors contribuer plus effi cacement à la conservation des habitats, tout en faisant en sorte que les artefacts culturels indigènes demeurent disponibles pour ceux qui cherchent à les préserver35. Si les paragraphes ci-dessus abordent les principales catégories d’ivoire, n’importe quelle dent (fi g. 23), y compris humaine (fi g. 21), peut être considérée comme de l’ivoire et dès lors faire l’objet de restrictions spécifi ques. Outre les méthodes visuelles mentionnées plus haut, l’état actuel de l’analyse scientifi que procure des techniques qui permettent aux chercheurs de localiser la source de l’ivoire au moyen d’une analyse ADN ou du contenu minéral de l’ivoire, ce qui détermine souvent l’origine spécifi que d’un animal en tenant compte de l’érosion, de l’impact des facteurs environnementaux et du régime alimentaire de l’espèce36. La morphologie apparue dans les caractéristiques physiques microscopiques de l’ivoire, de l’os, des noix et des imitations fabriquées à l’aide de méthodes de diagnostic dentaire – en général moins coûteuses et intrusives – peut également contribuer à l’authentifi cation des objets d’art tribal. Toutes ces méthodes encouragent toutefois une évaluation par un expert averti afi n de déterminer si un objet a été sculpté récemment ou s’il s’agit d’une imitation, une question qui revêt une importance capitale pour les collectionneurs d’art tribal, mais aussi pour les musées37. La science fournit de précieux outils, mais l’intervention d’un spécialiste chevronné et aguerri capable de comprendre la véritable « musique » des sculptures est tout aussi nécessaire si l’on souhaite identifi er correctement les objets d’art tribal.
