Hopi Kachina 145 FIG. 9: Patuñ (Squash Kachina). Squash is associated with winter and the feminine principle (Waters 1950: 262). The Squash Kachina is a wawarus, or runner. These run races with Hopi men in the spring. If a wawarus catches the man he races, he chastises him in some manner, such as whipping him; if the man wins, the wawarus gives him a gift.
