PORTFOLIO 144 FIG. 8: Alosaka (Germ God or Two-Horned God). This god of reproduction of man, plants, and animals plays an important part in Hopi religion. Gentle, kind, and aloof, he lives in the Underworld and is impersonated at Wuwuchim in November (Colton 1959: 79). The semicircular device above the head represents the rainbow on which Alosaka traveled from the San Francisco Mountains to consort with an Awatovi maiden. The rectangle represents a moisture tablet (pavaoakasi) made of cloth or buckskin stretched over a wood frame and decorated with feathers (Fewkes 1899: 121, LIX). It is usually worn on the dancer’s back. Copy photo by Scott McCue.
