60 NEW MUSEUM Milan—The new Museo delle Cultura, devoted to cultures from all over the world, will open its doors in Milan this coming October. Built in a former industrial zone that has been converted into a thriving cultural area known as the Zona Tortona, the museum houses some 7,000 objects from the Middle East, the Far East, South America, Southeast Asia, Oceania, and Africa. It brings together the many and diverse historical collections that the city of Milan has assembled over time: the curiosity cabinet of Manfredo Settala, the holdings of the city’s natural history museum, objects from different universal expositions held in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, etc. Its African collection is greatly enriched by the nearly 450 objects acquired from Milanese collector Alessandro Passaré. Spaces devoted to the living arts and a specialized library of more than 3,000 volumes complete this new venue, the starkly modern structure which was designed by British architect David Chipperfield and constructed at a reported cost of sixty million euros. ON A DOGON FIGURE Vézelay—The Musée Zervos, well known for its modern art collection, is expanding its horizons by devoting a temporary summer exhibition to the arts of Africa, more particularly to the Dogon of Mali. It is structured around a highlight in the museum’s collections—a Dogon figure with raised arms donated by the estate of Christian Zervos. Autour d’une Statuette Dogon (On a Dogon Figure) features some twenty works (figures, masks, cult objects, etc.) selected with the help of Alain Bovis and Véronique du Lac. It will be on view until November 15 and is accompanied by a catalog, available at the museum for the very reasonable price of 15 euros. ABOVE: Bracelets. East Africa. Brass or bronze.
