TRIBAL people FIGS. 6a & b (below): Seated figure. Akye, Côte d’Ivoire. Ex Parke-Bennet 10/25/69; Paul Rabut. A figure like this from the Musée des Civilisations in Abidjan was illustrated in Africa: The Art of a Continent and is apparently one of several in their collection (or was before the museum was looted in 2011). A few years ago I spoke with Monica Blackmun Visonà, who mentioned that when she visited that museum she was told that their examples had been dipped in creosote to protect the statues from insect infestation. The mystery of why my statue was natural wood and not black like those others was finally solved. FIG. 7 (right): Female figure. Alangua or Akye, Côte d’Ivoire. Ex Paul Rabut, René Rasmussen. This piece was illustrated in René Rasmussen’s book Art Negre (1951, p. 12) in which it was identified as “Statuette Alangoua.” It was also published in Alain- Michel Boyer et al. Arts Premiers de Cote d’Ivoire in 1997 (item #128), which called it Akye. Paul Rabut told me that it had been published in another book, but that information has been lost to me. Anyone know where it might be?
