Atauro ancestor fi gures, Itara, were often rendered in a Cubistic
sculptural style and feature a unique “forward sloping shoulders”
iconography. They primarily hung from rafters, sometimes in pairs.
Dutch anthropologist René Wassing was Michael Rockefeller’s surviving
companion on the ill-fated boat off Asmat, West Papua New Guinea.
