TRIBALART
Four Questions
for Alain Bovis
Tribal Art magazine: How did this book project
come about?
Alain Bovis: The idea was to show the full extent
of the beauty of the tribal art of the Himalayas
from the perspective of a passionate and
experienced eye, with the aim of preparing the
way for the discovery of the unknown.
Tribal Art magazine: What is unique about it?
Alain Bovis: It takes a unique aesthetic slant
through the selection of both objects and their
photographs.
The images are stripped down to refl ect the
power of an encounter with Himalayan art.
Tribal Art magazine: The emphasis on
highlighting the works through photography
shows a desire to pay tribute to their beauty.
How would you describe the aesthetic appeal of
the Himalayas?
Alain Bovis: Within tribal art, if there is such
a thing, Himalayan art turns our points of
reference on their head by plunging us into
a world that is wild and unusual. It’s an art
of materials, an expressionist art, an art of
deformations and excesses, an art that is wild—in
a word, like untamed nature. It takes us straight
to what it essential, freeing up our perspective.
And when it becomes a little more classical in
style, it attains an accomplished refi nement
equal to any of the great civilizations.
Tribal Art magazine: How do you go about
collecting art from this distant region?
Alain Bovis: To be able to appreciate and
acquire Himalayan objects, you need to
have a free spirit and cast your eye wide,
forgetting all forms of categorization.
When you collect Himalayan art, you leave
your points of reference behind you.
