L’ESPACE TRIBAL
Initiated in 2015 by Tribal Art magazine, this
event space at 22 Rue Visconti will once again be
a center for exchanges and for reflection on the
arts of Africa, Oceania, Asia, and the Americas.
As it does every year, Tribal Art magazine invites
you to attend the “Café Tribal” events held there
every morning to get your day started with programming
that features panels of specialists, museum
curators, and collectors in informal talks.
This year, the point of departure for these panel
discussions will be Javier Peres’ approach to his
installation Le Lion et la perle (The Lion and the
Jewel), located in the same space. Various periods,
places, genres, and artistic techniques will
cross paths and be better understood as moderator
Elena Martínez-Jacquet leads the meetings.
Espace Tribal will also celebrate the launch of
three new publications in the field of tribal art,
which will be presented for the first time on the
afternoon of September 14: Toys for the Souls:
Life and Art on the Mentawai Islands by Reimar
Schefold, Himalayan Masks: Lanfranchi Collection
by Luciano Lanfranchi and Renzo Freschi,
and Afrique, à l’ombre des dieux by Nicolas
Rolland with contributions by Louis Perrois.
THE LION AND THE JEWEL
Developed by Javier Peres, this exhibition is an
immersion into his artistic universe that mixes
contemporary and tribal art. Named after the
play by Wole Soyinka, it juxtaposes Nigerian
works supplied by dealers who are participating
in Parcours with artworks from Peres’ personal
collection of contemporary art. The installation
will focus on aesthetic comparisons between
contemporary works and those of non-European
cultures based on Peres’ personal experience.
