143 FIGS. 12a and b: Lebel notebook, leaf 28. Yup’ik, Napaskiak village, Kuskoquim River, Alaska. Wood, feathers, pigment. H: 84 cm. Collected by Adams Hollis Twitchell; Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation, New York; Julius Carlebach, New York, 1944; Georges Duthuit, New York/Paris; apparently André Breton, New York/Paris. Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, Paris, inv. 70.1999.1.1.1-3. Photo © Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac. Note: This is one of an opposing pair of whale masks that passed from the Heye Foundation through Julius Carlebach’s gallery. While this one carries Breton provenance, Lebel records it as having been acquired by Georges Duthuit. The whale mask that hung on the wall of Breton’s Paris apartment and appears in numerous photos was the mate to this one. How and when Breton acquired this mask is unclear. ROBERT LEBEL’S NOTEBOOK
