His presence in the heart of Brussels’ contemporary art neighborhood is embarked upon with the promise of collaborations with some of its most important residents in the years to come. Claes feels that this exposure will attract new audiences—young art collectors as well as African art collectors—whose numbers he would like to see increase and whose sensitivity to the art forms that he specializes in he wishes to develop. To this end, he foresees producing exhibitions in which major artworks from Western and Central Africa will be shown alongside less expensive but aesthetically pleasing works, all in an environment that will also allow him to display contemporary artworks from his personal collection. The long-awaited launch of this next phase of his endeavors will be an exhibition in the seaside town of Knokke-le-Zoute, Belgium, and will be a juxtaposition of contemporary and African art titled after its two participants: Didier Claes @ Patrick de Brock Gallery. From August 27–September 27, the public will be able to view the fruits of the collaboration between these two friends, which can be seen as inverted refl ections on a same experience of art—one being that of an African art professional and contemporary art enthusiast and the other that of a contemporary art professional and African art enthusiast. Didier Claes Is Moving BRUSSELS—It has been fourteen years since Didier Claes opened his fi rst gallery in 2002 in the Sablon, the heart of Brussels’ African art neighborhood. This fall, he will leave this iconic art area to inaugurate a new space on the section of Avenue Louis that in recent years has become home to the city’s top contemporary art galleries, including Almine Rech, Daniel Templon, and Nathalie Obadia. The move exemplifi es Claes’ determination and dynamism, as well as the high standards he has always applied to his profession. Equally important, it is further proof of his engagement in the ongoing development of the tribal art fi eld. Simply being where the afi cionados expect to fi nd such a gallery is no longer enough, nor is pure specialization. Based on his experiences showing at major international art and antiques shows such as
