PREVIEW Brussels—Belgian auction house Native has announced that concurrently with the Cultures art fair (the offshoot of BRUNEAF) that will be held June 8–12, it will preview a selection of works scheduled to be sold at its October 22 auction devoted to the African art collection of Leslie Sacks (1952–2013). A modern art dealer established in Los Angeles, he cultivated a specifi cally personal taste for the arts of Africa. His collection is the subject of a book titled Refi ned Eye, Passionate Heart: African Art from the Leslie Sacks Collection, edited by Amanda M. Maples and published by Skira in 2013. LEFT: Caryatid Stool. Luba, DR Congo. Late 19th century. Wood. H: 41.9 cm. Ex Leslie Sacks, Los Angeles. To be offered by Native on October 22, 2016. THE SUMMER OF MASKS Montréal—Galerie Jacques Germain will devote its summer show to the art of the mask in Sub-Saharan Africa, highlighting the sculptural richness and spiritual strength of this unique art form. From June 29 until July 30, 2016, fourteen antique masks of the highest artistic quality will be on view, largely by appointment. A Makonde mapiko initiation helmet mask from Mozambique or Tanzania is one of Africa’s most naturalistic styles, and an especially fine example will be included in the show. A mask from the Cameroon Grasslands, remarkable for its expressiveness and its dark patina, and a Guro zamblé dance mask from Côte d’Ivoire, the curvilinear forms of which show unusual elegance and grace, will also be featured and will certainly demand the attention of connoisseurs of these art forms.
