GARY SPRATT Fine Tribal Art Hidatsa Grass Dance Painting on Antelope Hide Northern Plains Late 19th century 48 x 53 inches (121 x 135 cm) Many early sources relate the Hethuska Society Dances as originating among the Omaha/Ponca tribes in the 17th century and may even have some direct associations with the pre-historic Fort Ancient groups of the Mississippian Cultural period. Th e dance evolved and was adopted by many of the historic tribes of the Plains in the 19th century which came to be called the Grass Dance. Th e Dance maintained its attributes to the War Dances of earlier times. By appointment: PO Box 474 Corte Madera, CA 94976 415-686-3061 grsprtt@gmail.com
