Pacifi c salmon skin, Amur River carp skin. Musée du Quai Branly, Paris. © MQB. Photo: Claude Germain. Coat of fi ne carp skin with painted decoration and arabesques of concentric curves. Numerous “snout” motifs have differently stylized iconography but are all represented as viewed from above. They indicate the locations of the bears honored during the festival. Evil spirits become lost in this labyrinth, where the various planes of life (underground/underwater, terrestrial, and celestial) fi t together concentrically and, like the intricate stitches, serve as protective armor, embellished by bright colors.
