It features informative essays by Frederic Cloth, Kristina Van Dyke, Louis Perrois, and Pierre Amrouche, as well as a complete exhibition checklist, together in a bilingual English/ French edition. Pulitzer, which is known for its support of experimental and thought-provoking projects. By training a computer engineer rather than an Africanist, Cloth’s approach to the material was rooted in mathematics and statistics rather than art history. Cloth became interested in the possibilities offered by the application of analytical processes to African art, and he chose Kota sculptures to test his ideas because the limited parameters of the corpus made it an ideal subject. What started out as individually rendered drawings created to document and better understand the artworks grew into a database of more than 2,000 examples, which, coupled with advanced algorithmic search tools to detect patterns and anecdotal historical information, resulted in the revelation of a surprising number of new hypotheses about Kota religious practice. Information also emerged about change and evolution in what has long been regarded to be a relatively monolithic artistic tradition. The installation in the Tadao Ando–designed space is spare and elegant, allowing all of the major substyles of the Kota tradition to be easily contrasted, as well as revealing extreme differences in size, style, and workmanship. Many of the sculptures can be viewed in the round, providing a rare opportunity to experience the surprising dimensionality of these seemingly fl at objects. A darkened gallery contains the Kota Data Cloud, which strikingly illustrates aspects of Cloth’s database through a combination of touchscreen interface and an immersive digital projection. Created by Rampant Interactive, this is a surprisingly effective tool for understanding (and playing with) Cloth’s process.
