Is it possible that Wauchope might have actually commissioned his examples from the villagers in the Anduar and Biwat areas during his earlier trip there in June of 1935?22 The fact that there are no sculptures of this kind among the Biwat objects that Margaret Mead collected in 1932, which are now in the American Museum of Natural History, begs the question. The stance of these stylized fi gures, which are sitting or squatting with both arms folded forward and hands clasped under the chin, appears to be specifi c to the Angoram region (Kaufmann 2015: fi g. 59). The voluminous heads of the fi gures are rounded in a very distinct manner, which, with a few exceptions (cf. E.46 231, fi g. 16), does not at all correspond to what is seen on the male fi gures on the fl ute stoppers. However, the position of the head with a sort of reverse diadem and the treatment of the shoulders that have a cape-like quality are completely characteristic of the statuary of this region.
