We cannot here provide complete descriptions of all of these exhibitions, both for want of space and in the interest of preserving an element of surprise, but we can say that, on the whole, they generally adhere to two complementary concepts. While some of the exhibitions, like Aesthetics (Alain Bovis), The Picha Collection (Pierre Dartevelle), and Ancient Terracottas from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede (Bruce Frank Primitive Art), will focus on a particular collector or dealer’s perception of objects, most of the others will explore a concept or a specifi c corpus of objects, such as Plains Indian ledger drawings (Donald Ellis Gallery), the bronzes of the Lhoron smelters of southwest Burkina Faso and northern Côte d’Ivoire (David Serra), the power and beauty of “sweating” patinas (Adrian Schlag), and any number of other fascinating topics. Three atypical exhibitions deserve separate mention. The fi rst, Temps Modernes (Modern Times), presents the work of several contemporary Beninese and Caribbean artists on the subject of modern-day slavery. It will be on view at Galerie Vallois, whose director, Robert Vallois, will be the honorary president of the Parcours des Mondes this year. The second, Hugues Dubois: A Thirty-fi ve Year Career in Photography, will be an homage to the life and work of this great Belgian photographer, whose lens has captured the beauty of so many masterpieces of tribal and other kinds of art. Lastly, Master’s Showcase is a new project through which the Parcours’ organizers will focus on exceptional trajectories and types of works. This year, Daniel Hordé, Ana and Antonio Casanovas, Bernard Dulon, and Frédéric Rond (Indian Heritage) have been invited to participate. Both the Dubois retrospective and the Master’s Showcase will be held at Espace Tribal at 22 Rue Visconti, where the magazine’s staff will also produce other events and lectures, including a second annual Café Tribal, a series of encounters and debates that this year will explore the subject of restoration. Tribal Art magazine will not be the only cultural nexus of the neighborhood during the Parcours. As it always does, Librairie Fischbacher will host a number of book signings with authors of recently published works, and, from September 1–11, the Barbier-Mueller Museum’s Cultural Foundation will present a photographic exhibition at Restaurant Alcazar, drawing on the former’s efforts to preserve endangered cultures. PRÉ PARCOURS DES MONDES Paris—No fewer than eighty-four galleries, more than half of them from outside France, will participate in the 2015 Parcours des Mondes, held in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighborhood of Paris from September 8–13. Visitors will need some tenacity to see it all. Excellence and the highest standards are the order of the day for this major event, which is now in its fourteenth year. Diversity and openness might further describe this year’s event, since 2015 will be the year that Asian art becomes part of this event, which is widely regarded by both participants and its audience to be the most important of its kind in the fi eld of non-European art. About twenty of the bestknown galleries specializing in the traditional arts of Japan, China, India, and Nepal, among other parts of Asia, will participate for the fi rst time. Gregg Baker (London), Jacques Barrère (Paris), and Christophe Hioco (Paris), are among the prominent Asian dealers. Galerie Tanakaya of Paris will present a special exhibition devoted to Japanese prints, with nineteenth- and twentieth-century works whose subjects are fl owers, birds, landscapes, and the ABOVE: Bust of Buddha.
