JOSÉ BEDIA 141 T. A. M.: I notice a repetition of certain object types in your collection. Does the comparison factor appeal to you, or are you more interested in new discoveries for the future? J. B.: The comparison factor is clear. As I mentioned before, in grouping objects from the same genre together, a clear recognition of stylistic tendencies emerges. When groups of like objects are placed together, they also help to explain each other more clearly. This also happens naturally, since I tend to visit the same place over the course of several different trips and collect objects from that area time and time again. Although I don’t have a foundation in cultural anthropology, I really enjoy drawing, taking photos, and collecting objects when I am in a particular place. In that, I think of humbly emulating someone like Fernand Grébert or Carl Schuster. Like them, I might even dare to suggest certain hypotheses here and there. Possible new discoveries may determine a new place I plan to visit, because the surprise factor is always important to me. T. A. M.: Since you have been involved in these arts for so many years, what do you see as the next stage? J. B.: The next necessary step would be to make a more detailed classification and record of all the material I have accumulated. Also, another huge next step would be to plan the future destiny of these objects, which I feel responsible for as a temporary keeper. I am trying to train my son and daughter in the enjoyment and passion for these objects, as well as my friends and colleagues (for some of whom the artistic value of these pieces is not yet apparent). Also, I would like to establish parallels with other areas of knowledge, even with contemporary art. Perhaps the next logical step could even be a museum? Perhaps if I unite my intentions with an institution or some philanthropic soul, we can create a dignified place for all these objects. For the time being, this is beyond my own capacity.
