ART in motion NEW AUCTION IN CALIFORNIA Scotts Valley, CA—Robert Slawinski Auctioneers will hold its inaugural sale of tribal art on January 18, 2015. The sale of more than 200 lots will include works from the collections of various owners and will feature Oceanic and Australian material from the collection of the late Louis A. Allen, the noted Aboriginal scholar and author of Time Before Morning: Art and Myth of the Australian Aborigines. Slawinski Auctioneers has been in business for more than twenty years, specializing in antiques, real estate, and, more recently, Chinese art. In September, several tribal pieces in a general sale sold well beyond expectations, 44 including a Yup’ik house mask that brought approximately $70,000. Sensing an opportunity, Slawinski has brought on Mike Auliso of nearby Tribalmania Gallery in Half Moon Bay, California, to provide expertise for the new sale. We wish them all the best with their new endeavor. NATIVE AMERICAN AT BONHAMS San Francisco—An assortment of Apache and other Southwest baskets from the John Bowers Collection highlights Bonhams’ annual fall auction of Native American art, which will be held on December 8 in San Francisco. The star of these baskets is a spectacular Apache olla, which is one of the largest examples known (est. $30,000–50,000). The star of this approximately 400-lot auction is a Navajo first-phase chief’s blanket from the Sidney and Alexandra Sheldon Collection of Malibu, California, (est. $200,000–300,000), which leads a large group of Southwestern textiles. Ancient ceramics from the Southwest are also well represented, the most impressive of which is an asymmetrical Mimbres black-onwhite bowl decorated with anthropomorphized quadrupeds and geometric forms (est. $10,000– 15,000). These are accompanied by a large collection of historic period ceramics and works by major ceramic artists including Maria Martinez and Margaret Tafoya. Hopi material, Navajo jewelry, and works from the Plains to the Northwest Coast round out the sale. Top left: Black-on-white bowl with anthropomorphic quadrupeds. Mimbres, New Mexico. C. AD 1000.
