But there are any number of reasons to visit Artcurial’s Hotel Dassault location before then. High among them is a cocktail reception on September 18, beginning at 6 p.m., in celebration of the release of Djenné-Jeno—1,000 Ans de Sculpture en Terre Cuite au Mali (Djenne-Jeno—1,000 Years of Terra Cotta Sculpture in Mali), Bernard de Grunne’s new book published by Editions Mercator. PREVIEW AT CHRISTIE’S Paris—Exhibitions of highlights of upcoming auction sales will be must-attend events in Paris beginning in September. Prominent among these, from September 8–25, Christie’s will preview highlights from its December 11 sale of African, Oceanic, and American Indian Art at its Avenue Matignon location. The collection is led by works from an important private European collection of African and Oceanic Art featuring one of the most significant Kanak masks from New Caledonia to be seen on the market in many years. Another high point is an exquisite Bembe seated male figure, once one of the gems of the renowned Saul and Marsha Stanoff Collection. AUTUMN AT SOTHEBY’S, PARIS Paris—Tribal art will without a doubt be one of the main protagonists of Sotheby’s fall season. As it did in 2012, on the occasion of the Biennale des Antiquaires, the auction house will present an exhibition of highlights from its autumn sales on the first floor of Galerie Charpentier, from September 6–16. An important Gabonese Kota reliquary, formerly owned by Charles Ratton, will be shown alongside works by modern artists such as Frantisek Drtikol and Alexander Calder. The art of the African continent will, moreover, be the focus of an entirely different initiative conceived of by the Sotheby’s African and Oceanic art department, to be produced in collaboration with Galerie Aveline. From September 9–22, the gallery will host Afrique(s), Dialogue entre les Arts d’Afrique et les Arts Décoratifs (Africa(s), Dialogue between the Decorative Arts and African Arts) at its 94 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré location. The exhibition will combine a selection of works from two FAR LEFT: Crouching figure. Dogon, Mali. Ex M. and Mme. Robert Hendrickx. To be offered at Artcurial on December 10, 2014. Est. €20,000–30,000. LEFT: Seated male figure. Bembe, DR Congo. H: 18 cm. Ex Saul and Masha Stanoff. To be offered at Christie’s, Paris, on December 11, 2014. BELOW: Statue, pou whakairo.
