SONS OF THE SUN La Rochelle—After an initial exhibition devoted to the Indians of the East Coast of North America, La Rochelle’s Musée du Nouveau Monde is continuing to explore Native American culture with a new show titled Indiens de la Californie et du sud-ouest des États-Unis (Indians of California and the American Southwest), on view from June 28–September 22, 2014. Popularized by “Western films,” the Indians of California and the Southwest (New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado) are anything but a homogeneous group. In the nineteenth century, nearly sixty different tribes inhabited the territory that is now California, living in varied climates under many different social models. The Southwest was populated by five main cultural groups, the best known of which are the Navajo and the Pueblo. Most of these peoples met with tragic destinies and those that survived regained their liberty only through bitter conflicts. ABOVE: Louis Choris, Coiffure de danse des habitants de Californie. The exhibition includes material from both public and private French collections and is a reflection of a widespread interest in France about Indian culture and artifacts. Weapons, apparel, utilitarian items, and cult objects illustrate both the wealth of the collections made by French explorers and scientific expeditions as well as the fruitfulness of the exchanges that took place between the Musée du Trocadéro and the Smithsonian Institution.
