A wide variety of rare objects will be offered, including a group of fine American Indian items, a highlight of which is a Sioux cradle from a private French collection, estimated at 200,000–250,000 euros. African objects will be by far the most numerous in the sale, which will feature a selection of sixty-six pieces from among the three hundred objects that make up the collection of Léonore and Rudolf Blum. The latter, a renowned Swiss attorney and modern painting collector, is described by Pierre Amrouche in the sale catalog as a tireless “art hunter.” Blum long had a fascination with Africa and he and Léonore traveled there extensively in the 1960s. He made his only field acquisition during that time: a terracotta vessel from Mali. His quest for objects was driven by an insatiable curiosity, although he was careful to seek advice from academics, antique dealers, and other collectors. Over time he formed a collection of powerful and atypical works sourced from the best African art dealers of the time, and the masterpieces in his collection attest to the keenness of his eye. They include an Ivorian Senufo maternity figure formerly in the René Salanon Collection (Paris), which is estimated at 200,000–300,000 euros. Also of particular note from this collection is a Luba-Shankadi headrest attributed to Master the of the Cascade Coiffure, which is likely to set a record for an object of its kind. Cradle.
