Hopi Kachina 149 FIG. 15: Awatobi Soyok Wüqti (Awatovi Ogre Woman). Ogres are disciplinary kachinas who punish children and keep them under control. They are among the Anaye, or Alien Gods, powerful destroyers of humans. This is an Awatovi variant of Soyoko, or Nataskas (monsters), and she appears at the Bean Dance only at First Mesa. She is distinguished from the Walpi version by corn-cob teeth and two white, parallel bars on each cheek (Fewkes 1899: 75, XII). Such marks are applied to warrior kachinas and other fierce spirits (cf. Colton 1959: 81) and may also signify asterisms in the Milky Way, the Black Road of the dead. Nataskas epitomize the dark forces of the nadir and of the Death Principle—the diametrical opposite of the Life Principle embodied in the fiery road of the sun. Copy photo by Scott McCue.
