Hopi Kachina 147 FIG. 12: Coto/Sohu (Star Kachina). This is the Walpi version of the Star Kachina. The Oraibi variant, Sohu, is covered by a single star (Fewkes 1899: 89, XXVIII). The Star Kachina represents the night sky of the Underworld. More specifically, the hide draped on its back stands for the firmament, conceived of as a skin drawn across the arc of the sky; the skin of a spotted animal, such as a wildcat or (formerly) jaguar, might be chosen, the spots representing stars. Small crosses on its arms and legs represent stars, while the three stars on its crown may signify the Strung-Up Ones (Orion’s belt). Copy photo by Scott McCue.
