Hassler, Terry- Holden American Museum Expedition, 1937–38, Dr. William Hall Holden, leader. Photographer’s note: A young Wai-Wai being initiated into warrior-hood. Since no female eyes must look on him during the ceremonies, he has to wear this “haystack” of palm leaves. Taken in a Wai-Wai village on the Mapuera-Wau, headwater of the Rio Mapuera, Brazil, January 1938. Cat. no. 180. FIG 7 (left): Photographer: William G. Hassler, Terry- Holden American Museum Expedition, 1937–38, Dr. William Hall Holden, leader. Photographer’s note: A Wai- Wai buck’s coiffure seems to interest his own small son and a neighbor’s youngster. Bark slings are the usual “baby carriages.” These were visitors to the camp at Ishear-Tun, British Guiana, November 1937. Cat. no. 181.
