35 SUMMER SALE OF AFRICAN AND OCEANIC ART Paris—On June 18, collectors of African and Oceanic art will have a double opportunity to acquire tribal art at Sotheby’s in Paris. At 4 p.m., the Françoise and Jean Corlay Collection will attract aficionados of Zairean art. This single-collection sale will include a group of important Songye figures, both large and small, which beautifully embody notions of power and sensitivity and are all but emblematic of the artistic creations of the peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Yaka art will also be offered, including an exceptionally refined headrest, formerly in the Bela Hein Collection. At 4:30 p.m. on the same day, a second session will feature works in search of new owners from a variety of collections. The objects were gathered over the course of more than thirty years by Belgian collector Benoît Rousseau, who bought them both in situ and on the international art market. A catalog will be published as a lasting souvenir of this exhibition, which will, without a doubt, delight tribal art lovers. Finally—and this is certainly not entirely coincidental— it should be noted that the preview of BRUNEAF coincides with the preview of Dr. Livingstone, I Presume?, an important exhibition that will be open until October 27. It is being organized by the King Baudouin Foundation, the BELvue Museum (where the show will be held), and the Royal Museum of Central Africa in Tervuren to commemorate the bicentenary of the birth of David Livingston (1813–1873), the Scottish doctor and missionary whose name will forever be linked to the exploration of Africa in the second half of the nineteenth century, and particularly an 1871 meeting with Henry Stanley. Look for an article about this interesting exhibition in an upcoming issue of this magazine.
