ART in motion FIG. 8 : Sculpture représentant Huehueteotl, style de El Zapotal (?), État de Veracruz, Mexique, env. 600 à 800 apr. J.-C. Céramique. H. : 58 cm. Musée Barbier-Mueller, inv. 507-18. © Musée Barbier-Mueller, photo studio Ferrazzini Bouchet. was a museum collection had much to do with the fact that it is an exceptional grouping. Objectively, I am confident that the collection’s diversity will astound people. There are works from Brazil, Central America, and Peru, not to mention all the productive and creative civilizations that are represented by at least one real masterpiece. It is inconceivable that true aficionados will not be moved by it! T. A.: Let’s talk about the buyers. Do you think the sale will arouse the interest of collectors and institutions in the countries the pieces are from? J. P. B.-M.: I really don’t know. Truthfully, I would guess that if there is a reaction, it would not be to acquire them at auction but to attempt to reclaim them. T. A.: Does that worry you? J. P. B.-M.: No. Absolutely not. We are in France, a country that is signatory to the UNESCO Convention of 1997. That means that any work that left the country of origin prior to that date cannot be reclaimed by it. This is the case for the pieces in my collection, for which appropriate precautions have been taken. T. A.: In conclusion, what is the ideal future that you envision for the works Sotheby’s will disperse? J. P. B.-M.: My greatest and most fervent hope is that they will not be snatched up by billionaires, even if that means that they will bring less money … I want the pieces to go to people who will love them at least as much as I have loved them. It already makes me happy to think of the joy that they will bring to those collectors.
