33 AUCTIONS IN PARIS Paris—It appears that this spring will be favorable for the sale of important collections. The first is the subject of the first feature article in this magazine: the Barbier-Mueller Collection of Pre-Columbian Art that will be offered for sale over the course of two sessions on March 22 and 23 by Sotheby's in Paris. Soon after, the Droûot Richelieu will host two important sales of American Indian art. Almost ten years after the death of collector Yves Berger, on March 25 the auction house EVE will auction the collection of nineteen Hopi kachina dolls that this famous French writer and editor gathered with passion during his many travels. The second sale there will also be of art by the Hopi Indians, this one organized by Etude Néret-Minet Teissier & Sarrou. The L. S. Collection will be sold on April 12 after having been presented April 2–6 at Galerie Reveillaud Nast at 10 Rue d’Alger in Paris. Built over thirty years, it consists of seventy Katsinam masks—also known as Kachina—depicting the most important spirits of the Hopi pantheon. While important, these aren’t the only sales coming up, as the box to the right shows. AFRICAN TERRACOTTAS Chicago —In 1993, Douglas Dawson Gallery mounted its first exhibition of African ceramics, then a little-known area of African art. Today, most museum displays of African art include ceramics and they are increasingly recognized as an integral component of the art and ritual of the continent. This spring, the gallery will present a new show, Terra Cotta: Twenty Years of Exhibiting African Ceramics, which will be the Dawson’s eleventh exhibition on this subject. On display from March 15–April 26, this installation celebrates two decades of collecting, studying, and promoting interest in this field. It will feature approximately thirty examples of rare, traditional vessels and ceramic sculpture. This show kicks off what will be an active exhibition schedule for the gallery this year.
